Amides are named as derivatives of carboxylic acids by substituting the -oic ending of the acid for -amide .

amides1 nomenclature

[1] Methanamide

[2] Ethanamide

[3] N-Methylpropanamide

[3] N,N-Dimethylbutanamide

Amides are priority groups compared to amines, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes and nitriles.

amides2 nomenclature

[5] 3-Hydroxybutanamide

[6] 3-Hydroxy-4-methyl-6-oxohexanamide

Amides act as substituents when there are priority groups in the molecule, in this case, they precede the name of the main chain and are named as carbamoyl -.......

amides3 nomenclature

[7] 5-Carbamoylpentanoic acid

[8] 5-Bromo-4-carbamoylheptanoic acid

When the amide group is attached to a ring, the ring is named as the main chain and the ending -carboxamide is used to name the amide.

amides4 nomenclature

[9] Benzenecarboxamide (Benzamide)

[10] 4-Bromo-3-methylcyclohexanecarboxamide
